Background

On 8 January 2008, the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr. John Gormley T.D., announced that he had established two Committees to review local electoral areas. The review is needed to take account of the changes in population that have taken place since the last similar review in 1998. The Committees are required to report to the Minister not later than 20 June 2008 and their reports will be considered as the basis for a revision of the local electoral areas for use at the local elections to be held in 2009.

The Dublin and Cities Electoral Area Boundary Committee will report on the areas of Dublin City, Cork City, Galway City, Limerick City, Waterford City, and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin County Councils.

The Electoral Area Boundary Committee will report on the county councils outside of Dublin as well as on Drogheda, Sligo, Bray and Dundalk.
